Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar

Guru for Department of Hindustani Classical Vocal

Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar is one of the finest vocalists of India today. He represents perhaps the three most widely recognized Gharanas of music today, i.e. Gwalior, Agra and Jaipur.

He was initiated into music by his father Shri Nagesh Dattatraya Kashalkar. He received his early training from Pt Rajabhau Kogje and Pt. Khardenavis. He is a post graduate in music from Nagpur University. Later on, after shifting to Mumbai, he received tutelage from Pt. Ram Marathe and Pt. Gajananrao Joshi.

He joined the ITC Sangeet Research Academy at Kolkata in 1992, and has since trained a number of students in the Guru-Shishya Parampara. Many of his shishyas have become renowned vocalists in India today.

He is a traditionalist, and is adept in switching over between the three gharana styles of music even during a single performance. He is also known for his authentic presentation of obscure traditional (anvat) ragas.

Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar is a much honoured and decorated vocalist and Guru, having received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2008 and the Padma Shri in 2010, amongst many other honours.
