Taalyogi Pt. Suresh Talwalkar is one of the finest exponents of ‘Tabla’ in the country today. He has dedicated his entire life to learning, mastering and propagating the fine art of playing tabla. A teacher who strongly believes in the ancient and time-tested ‘Guru-Shishya’ tradition of India, his tabla school is named ‘Taalyogi Ashram’ in deference to the tradition.
Pt. Talwalkar has imbibed both, the Hindustani style of layakari (science of rhythm) as well as the Carnatic style. Having learnt tabla initially from his father Shri. Dattatraya Talwalkar, he was later tutored by Pt. Pandharinath Nageshkar and Pt. Vinayakrao Ghangrekar, both eminent exponents of tabla.
Apart from being an outstanding performer, Pt. Suresh Talwalkar is a dedicated and devoted teacher. Hundreds of students have learnt the fine art of ‘laya and taal’ under his tutelage, some of whom have earned great name and fame themselves. Pt. Sureshdada Talwalkar, as he is referred to respectfully, has trained over 1500 shishyas worldwide out of which nearly 150 of these shishyas are teaching tabla as a full time occupation, thus giving back to the society what they have learned from their Guru.
His mastery over tabla and his commitment to propagate the same through his Gurukul has received due recognition from the society. He has been honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award as well as the
Padma Shri in the year 2013, among many other honours.
