Pt. Hridaynath Mangeshkar is one of the most recognized and respected music composers and singers of India today. He is also referred to as ‘Bhavgandharva’ or the ‘master of expressions’ because of the mesmerizing emotional quality of his compositions.
His musical heritage is widely known, being the only son of the late Master Deenanath Mangeshkar and the brother of the Mangeshkar Sisters, Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, Meena Khadikar, Asha Bhosale and Usha Mangeshkar. He has received tutelage in classical vocal music from late Ustad Amir Khan saheb.
He is known for his amazing repertoire of compositions, particularly in Marathi, of some of the best known poets-lyricists. He has composed music to the verses of saints/lyricists/poets as diverse as Sant Dnyaneshwar, Surdas, Kabir, Meerabai, Mirza Ghalib, Aarti Prabhu, Grace, Suresh Bhat, Kusumagraj, Shanta Shelke, Gulzar and many others. Many of his compositions are difficult to render and require singers of great calibre and range. Almost all of his compositions are based on traditional Indian classical music. However, he has also created some great folk tunes, which are as popular today as they were over 40-50 years ago, when they were first created. He has also composed film music for many Marathi and Hindi films.
Pt. Hridaynath Mangeshkar is a recipient of many awards and honours. He is the recipient of the National Award for Best Music for the film Lekin in 1990. He has also been honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
